Ittenyon is a special time of the year. There is something about that date and a big wrestling show that just makes sense. Thankfully, while I’m no longer bothered about what’s going down in the Tokyo Dome, TJPW is here to make sure I still have a lovely day. This company plus Korakuen hasn’t let me down in a long old time, and I can’t imagine January 4th is going to be the moment that changes, but let’s find out.

For around five minutes, I pondered whether I could justify making Mio Momono my wrestler of the year when she hasn’t got into the ring since September. Then I realised I was being a fucking idiot. Mio wrapped up this meaningless award back in June and isn’t just my wrestler of the year but the best wrestler in the world right now.

I don’t think Ice Ribbon’s year is ending the way anyone expected it to. With a host of faces leaving the company, Ribbonmania 2021 feels like a changing of the guard, and I’m not entirely sure what their 2022 will look like. However, I know that I am more than happy to follow them along for the ride and have full faith in Tsukka and co figuring it out.

Ramblings About’s Matches of the Month for December 2021
December’s matches of the month is a tad shorter than usual because I’ve spent a lot of the month home for Christmas and was working on putting together my end of year stuff. However, there are still a few gems here, so I’m sure you’ll find something to enjoy. If that’s not enough, well, fuck you. Happy New Year!

With matches of the year ticked off the list, it’s onto the all-important Rambling’s About’s wrestler of the year. It’s the most coveted award going, and, sadly, these four didn’t win it. They did come really close, though! Well, actually, that’s not true, my number one was miles ahead of everyone else, but they are all awesome and had brilliant years. If you disagree, well, em, there’s not much I can do about that, but screw you.

When trying to figure out what should top this list, it quickly became clear that the answer was actually kinda easy. While I loved a lot of wrestling over the last twelve months, the match that defined 2021 took place at GAEAISM. Not just because of what happened in the ring, but because of everything that came together to make it. Marvelous and Sendai Girls could have so easily dropped the ball on this one, the multiple delays and an injury to Takumi Iroha disrupting their plans, but they did nothing of the sort. After a build packed with brilliant tag-team matches and a gauntlet that was booked to perfection, it finally went ahead, and everything was in place for a hell of a main event.

Wow, what a year. The world may not have got any better, as it is still a total shitshow out there, but hey, there was some brilliant wrestling, right? I started off with a long list of thirty matches and have whittled that down to ten, nine of which I have written about below (in chronological order). This is the best of the rest, but honestly, any one of them could have been my match of the year (which I’ll have an article up about tomorrow). 2021 may not have fixed the world, but wrestling continued to make me very happy, and this lot played a big part in that.

TJPW have made popping to Nagoya before Christmas a bit of a tradition in recent years, and with the addition of hometown girl Yuki Arai to the roster, this was a chance for the company to make some new fans. So far, Arai has stepped up to every test they’ve thrown at her, but this was her biggest yet, as she took on the Ace, Miyu Yamashita, in the main event. Would she stumble? I’m writing this before watching the match, but I would put the house I don’t own on no.

I am always excited for Marvelous shows, but after the beautiful chaos that was the main event of the last one, I was doubly so for this. Marvelous are leaning into the Colour Wars, which have seen them divide their roster based on the colour of their gear (I may have come up with the name myself). It’s a beautifully simple way to put together wrestling matches, and my god, is it working.

With TJPW’s final Korakuen of 2021 done and dusted, it’s time to shift the focus to the first one of 2022. Yes, Ittenyon is somehow just around the corner, and we’re beginning to put all the chips in place. We’ve already got Mizuki vs Miyu, but now it’s time to find out what the International Princess Title and Hikari Noa will be doing. How fun!
