Beauty and horror, in theory, they are at opposite ends of the spectrum. And yet Guillermo Del Toro has made a career out of weaving these unlikely bedfellows together. Crimson Peak is him indulging his own whims and if nothing else can be said of it, this is a stunning looking film.
Most people’s favourite movies centre around a character they can relate to, respect or have a feeling of affection for. However, every now and then a movie comes along that is populated by, well, cunts. Which brings us to Maps to the Stars, the latest movie by the brilliant David Cronenberg and a satirical look at the world of Hollywood and the nature of celebrity. It’s a film that will make you laugh, horrify you and which I imagine many will take against (at least a few people walked out of the screening I was in), however, it is also full of thoroughly unlikable characters.
The Double is director Richard Ayoade’s (The IT Crowd) second film in the directorial seat, following on from 2010’s Submarine. It is based off a short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and stars Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. It’s a movie that suggests that Ayoade is not willing to stick to his comedic comfort zone as it differs widely from The It Crowd’s own brand of surreal humour.
