‘Do I have to wear it, mum?’

A film where Casey Affleck spends 90% of the running time dressed like a last-minute Halloween costume and in which a camera sits and focuses on Rooney Mara for nine minutes as she devours a pie could have gone, well, any number of ways to be honest but most of them would be bad. However, if you can stomach the long lingering shots and the Terrence Malick feel to this dreamy reflection on grief, then there is something here. I’m not quite sure what, but it’s there.

Carol (2015)

Oscar season tends to see us being served up a lot of crap.  Overly emotional films stuffed with showy performances designed to catch the eye of the Academy.  For every work of art, there is ten that just outright stink.  However, every now and then one comes along that blows everything else out the water.  A film that nails real emotion on the big screen.  Carol is one of those rare breeds.

Trash

There’s a lazy habit in the film industry of boiling things down to an elevator pitch and then sticking with that description.  Therefore, it’s no surprise that Trash has become widely known as a Brazilian, Slumdog Millionaire.  Directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Richard Curtis, the film has star power behind the scenes, but then chose to follow the City of God model by taking its lead actors from the streets of Brazil, rather than the glamour of Hollywood.

The idea of humans falling in love with machines is not a new one in cinema, it’s a common trope of the sci-fi genre, but if anything the last few years have led to it hitting closer and closer to home.  Advances in technology like the Iphone suggest a future where, while our computers may not get to think for themselves, they may well be able to trick you into believing they can.
