Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang – Four Foot Shack

Cover albums are notoriously difficult to pull off.  Releasing a collection of tracks by bands better than your own (*cough* Puddle of Mudd) that sound exactly like the originals is one of the laziest ways to finish up a record label contract and insure that the rest of the world thinks your a bit of a plank.  On the other hand take an original song and make it your own (Marilyn Manson being an expert at this) and it can kick start a career.  However you get the impression that Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang don’t really care about career progression or probably even what other people think about them, this is an album that feels like it was made purely for fun.

Consisting of Les Claypool on bass and Bryan Kehoe on guitar Four Foot Shack see’s the two of them taking on a selection of tracks from the Claypool back catalogue, along with one original song and some other covers.  The catch is they’ve decided to re-imagine these tracks as a collection of redneck country songs.  It’s a formula that is as bonkers as it sounds and as they twang their way through “Staying Alive” you will know instantly whether this is something you want in your life or not.

Let’s put it simply.  There is a lot of things to enjoy in this album.  Their crack at Alice in Chains “Man in a Box” is almost unrecognisable from the original, while their Johnny Cash inspired cover of Tom Conners “The Bridge Came Tumbling Down” is rather brilliant.  However, it’s also a joke that quickly goes stale.  You’ll listen to this album, pick out a couple of tracks you like, listen to them a few more times and then forget about it.  In many ways though that’s okay, this is a band that was obviously put together to have a good time and Four Foot Shack does exactly that.
