The Viper strikes again.

Another year another Rumble and another feeling of bitter disappointment for wrestling fans. Or maybe not, for some people do seem to have been quite pleased with this year’s event, and it certainly set the seeds for more than one WrestleMania match. Whatever your thoughts, it’s timeĀ for you to sit back and listen to me as I run through ten things I noticed during this year’s event.

Heavy Scotland Battle Of The Bands Night 1

If you’re Edinburgh-based get down and show your support.

Heavy Scotland are, in their words, looking to help grow the Scottish metal scene. Bringing overĀ BehemothĀ is a good start, but if they really want to do that they need to get some locals on the bill and they’ve found the perfect way to do it. Over three nights, eight bands will go head to head to fight for the opportunity to open the main stage of this two-day festival on the Sunday. The first night gave us a glimpse at who could take their place on that stage.

Betraying The Martyrs – The Resilient

While doing a metal version of ‘Let It Go’ might get you plenty of those internet clicks it is unlikely to gain you much in the way of metal cred. A problem thatĀ Betraying The MartyrsĀ must surely be aware of. In essence a deathcore band (this being the type of core which means modern metalcore rather than anything related to hardcore) they have at times struggled due to their own ambition; their big sweeping sound bringing equal parts praise and derision.

Cabin Fever (2016)

cabin-fever-2016-poster
I do quite like this poster, though.

The original Cabin Fever could be packaged up and presented as my first horror movie. If you see it before you’ve dived into that world, you’ll probably enjoy it, but going back to it after watchingĀ Evil DeadĀ andĀ Last House On The HouseĀ makes you realise quite how derivative it is. All of which makes you wonder why the hell you’d decide to remake it.

10 Observations From Fantastica Mania

fantasticamania-640x370
I can’t find pictures from the event, so you’ll have to deal with a random smattering.

As a newcomer to New Japan, Fantastica Mania is a bit of a strange one. It’s the bump in the road before we get back to the serious stuff and it introduces a whole new cast of guys (the CMLL wrestlers) into a group that I’m only just getting to know. However, I’m nothing if not a trooper, and I wasn’t about to slow down on my newfound puroresu love. Therefore, over the last few days I’ve tuned into all the broadcast shows of Fantastica Mania and here are ten things that I took away from them.

Live Review: The Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Ho99o9 & Primitive Weapons

Enough has been said aboutĀ Dillinger Escape Plan’sĀ decision to call it a day after this album cycle.Ā Happy about it or not, we have to accept it and move on. Move on to celebrating one of the greatest bands of all time.Ā DissociationĀ was a fantastic way to start to that process. An album that somehow managed to encapsulate everything that that band is. Now, we move onto the final tour, as DillingerĀ rolled into Glasgow.

Kenny Omega

640
This match gets better and better.

Two weeks ago Kenny Omega walked out of Wrestle Kingdom as the hottest thing in wrestling. Ignoring the fact thatĀ Kazuchika Okada was as important to that match as he was and that Omega has been brilliant for years, it suddenly felt like the world woke up to The Cleaner. Yet, rather than turn his sights towards a potential rematch with Okada and a chance to become only the seventh non-Japanese wrestler to hold the belt andĀ help spearhead New Japan’s push into the US, he began talking about taking some time off.

WWE UK Championship Tournament

Nae their bonniest photo.

The UK Championship worried me. It worried me because I saw a future when WWE stepped into the British market and ripped apart something that has taken decades to build. That they would cherry pick the best talent and walk away having added nothing to what they left behind. It wouldn’t be the first time WWE played the big bully. Thankfully, it looks like I was wrong.
