Ramblings About’s Matches of the Month for August 2023

August is a slightly different month for my Ramblings About roundup. Since the 18th, I’ve been in Japan, so the second half of this list is entirely made up of matches I’ve seen in person. Seeing something live alters how you view it, and if you’re looking for in-depth analysis over more feeling-based yelling, you might want to go elsewhere. However, I’ve been having a lovely old time, and I still hope there is some value in what I have to say.

July has been a quiet month for me, meaning there has been plenty of time to focus on wrestling. So, this round-up of my favourite matches is a biggie, as we hit everything from New Japan bloodbaths to Asako Mia in a lucha mask. That sounds like a good time, right?

Another month down, another group of fantastic matches that I want to ramble about. The wider wrestling world has been busy over the last thirty days, but, as usual, not much of that made the cut (although there is a taste of New Japan). I actually watched most of Forbidden Door, but was it as good as a WAVE show in front of 80 people? I think we all know the answer to that.

May is a quieter month for my best matches roundup, not because there isn’t plenty to talk about (there is), but because it’s exam time in Scotland, and as someone whose job is to help kids prepare for them, I’ve been quite busy. Still, I had a lot to say about the things I did have time to watch, and there are at least a couple I will be returning to at the end of the year, so May more than held up its end of the bargain.

April and the start of May are the busiest months of the year for me, so I haven’t watched anywhere near as much wrestling this month. However, I consume a stupid amount of the stuff on average, so let’s not pretend I haven’t still spent a lot of time watching people pretending to fight. With that in mind, here are my favourite matches from April of 2023.

Ramblings About’s Matches of the Month for March 2023

What a gang. Credit: TJPW

Even when you remove the start of WrestleMania Weekend (which came too late to make this list), March was a packed month for wrestling. TJPW ran their biggest venue yet, Gatoh Move celebrated their 300th show, Takumi Iroha returned to Marvelous and Ice Ribbon, well, Ice Ribbon did a lot of stuff. Good and bad, it was a busy old time, and there were plenty of great matches to get our teeth into.

Ramblings About’s Matches of the Month for February 2023

If January brings the excitement of a new year and the motivation to keep up with every promotion going, then February is inevitably the month when real life intrudes. Unless you’re young enough to have very few responsibilities (and lucky you if so), the sad reality is that you can’t watch everything. However, fear not, because that brilliant match you missed in the crowd? It might just be on this list, ready for you to discover it.

Maybe it’s just me, but January always feels like a fresh start for my wrestling viewing. My backlog from the previous year goes out of the window, under the assumption that if I haven’t watched it yet, I never will, and it’s a chance to jump back into promotions that I might have fallen away with it. When you throw in Ittenyon and all the excitement around that, it’s usually a good month, something this list makes clear.

A Slight Change

I wanted to drop a quick note to mention that most of my reviews will now be appearing on a new collaborative project called Marshmallow Bomb. I’m sure I will still use Ramblings About Wrestling occasionally, I’ve put too much effort into it to ditch it completely, but the frequency of posts will probably drop substantially. If you are one of the people who actively seek my writing out, thank you, and you can go over and subscribe to Marshmallow Bomb here: https://marshmallowbomb.substack.com and follow it on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/BombMarshmallow. That way, you’ll get access to both my work and that of people substantially more talented than me.

As I say, this isn’t the end of Ramblings About, just a change, but it still feels like a good time to say thank you to anyone who has read anything I’ve written over the last few years. It is a constant source of bafflement to me that anyone gives a shit what I think, but it does make me feel nice.

If you enjoyed my ramblings, please consider contributing to my Ko-fi. Even the smallest amount is appreciated.

Ice Ribbon Ribbonmania (31/12/22) Review

I may have written up all my end-of-year lists and put a cap on 2022, but the year isn’t over until we talk about Ribbonmania, Ice Ribbon’s annual year-closing show. It might have only been a six-match card, but with two title matches and Yuuki Mashiro’s goodbye (which doubles as Suzu Suzuki’s return), there were plenty of things to get us talking.
