There have been very few films released in the last year that are as brave as All is Lost.  Which could easily have been called Robert Redford On A Boat.  If there are fifty words said in this film I would be surprised and apparently the script was only 32 pages long.  There is also only one actor in the entire film, the aforementioned Robert Redford.  If you can find me another film like that then it will be a rare one.

12 Years a Slave

So as we enter Oscar season it becomes clear that a certain kind of film begins to dominate our cinema screens.  Movies that are aiming for one of those nice shiny statues are out in force in the UK and one of the pack leaders stands in the form of Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave.  It’s a movie that tells the remarkable true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the early 1800’s.  It was nominated for 9 awards by the Academy and has so far appeared to receive universal acclaim.

Weekly Playlist 13/1/2014

So the holidays are well and truly over and we are now entering 2014, where we have a whole host of excitement ahead of us.  With the dawn of the new year I am now determined that I will actually post a playlist every week, so here is the first, where I am focusing on bands we can expect new material from in the coming year.  My first review of the year should also be up later today.

“Some of these events are true”.  The words that open American Hustle are a fair reflection of the liberties this film has taken with the story of the Abscam con.  Directed by David S. Russell and seen by him as the spiritual third part of a trilogy that also includes The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle see’s the return of many of the stars who graced those previous efforts and much like those films, is well on it’s way to sweeping up this awards season.

So with albums down, I now move onto films.  I’m only going to do a top 5, mainly because I haven’t been reviewing throughout the whole year.  The list only includes post award season films.  With the thought being that you can find a million sources online to tell you why you should go see Lincoln etc.  I also don’t think many of them would make the list anyway.

Nebraska

Alexander Payne (The Descendants) is the director behind the dark comedy of Nebraska, which he chose to release in black and white.  Starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte, it’s a film that has quickly found it’s way in the critics favourite category, with it having been nominated for the Palme D’Or at Cannes, where Bruce Dern also picked up best actor.  As always this means there is a question mark hanging over it as to whether it will translate it’s success to the general public.

Some real ramblings about football

Derek Mcinnes: the man to change Aberdeen’s fortunes?

While – if my ode to John Terry didn’t make it clear – I am a Chelsea fan, the team closest to my heart when it comes to football is Aberdeen, it’s where I was born, raised and I’ve spent many a cold day huddled up at Pittodrie, miserable and bored as I watched a selection of awful Aberdeen players trudge around a football pitch.  Therefore, this season has been a bit weird.  Mainly because we seem to actually be quite good.

Frozen

Following last year’s Wreck it Ralph Disney have gone back to what they know best with their recent animation Frozen as it see’s them returning to the good old princess and prince story, but this time with a twist.  Based, very loosely, off of Hans Christian Anderson’s Snow Queen the adaptation was directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan) and Jennifer Lee (who was a writer on Wreck it Ralph).  It’s release has seen it break a collection of records in North America, all of which it has to be said are the kind of records that no one really cares about, but nevertheless has still made a nice sum of money and appears to be doing very well critically as well.
