Eddie The Eagle is a classic British legend. A man who went to the Olympics and was a bit rubbish and off the back of that became a national hero. It taps into that British love of a trier, and you can bet that most people would think of him long before they got round to actually successful Olympians. It is strange then that it has taken this long for his story to reach the big screen.
Since Disney’s acquisition of Pixar and the hiring of John Lassiter their animation department has gone through a bit of a resurgence. Everyone is aware of the phenomenon that is Frozen but around that films like Big Hero Six have shown an ability to move away from the classic Disney formula. To be added to that realm is Zootropolis (known as Zootopia in America) a film set in an animal utopia.
Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Few titles sell themselves better than that one. For all of Marvel’s success on the big screen, not one of their heroes has the name value of the big two. Being given the chance to direct that film is basically an open goal and yet it is an open goal that Zack Snyder has missed dramatically.
The reintroduction of Jesse Leach into Killswitch Engage rejuvenated the band. Their last album, Disarm the Descent, laid down the gauntlet to every group that has taken the music they make and turned it into generic shit to peddle to the masses. While at the same time their live show seemed to ignite.
Few filmmakers could be attached to a film based on a J.G. Ballard novel and seem a natural fit. However, very few filmmakers are Ben Wheatley. Now five films into his career, he has already shown an unbelievable talent for taken twisted ideas and turning them into magic. If anything, it would be insane for him not to direct High–Rise.
10 Cloverfield Lane is – among other things – a piece of marketing genius. Originally conceived under the title of The Cellar, JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot noticed thematic similarities to Cloverfield and changed the title to reflect this. Suddenly, a movie which could very easily have come out and been completely ignored had a bit of buzz behind it. Dan Trachtenberg’s debut film was all set to be a hit.
There are still people who believe that by reforming, Refused have spat on their legacy. That no matter what they do now, it is not enough to make up for the fact they went back on their word. Personally, I think that’s bullshit, and as the final notes rang over the Glasgow Garage, you can’t help but feel sorry for the people that because of their own stubborn nature, will miss out on the band these punks have become.
Post Pop Depression came out of nowhere. A collaborative effort between Josh Homme (who produces as well as providing vocals and instruments) and Iggy Pop, it is however very much Iggy’s album and could easily lay claim to being his best in years.
The Defiled are the latest band to throw in the towel, announcing that like many of their peers, the financial cost of remaining a band is too much to bare. This follows high-profile cases like CJ from Thy Art is Murder, who left the band while claiming that trying to live life as a member of a touring band in 2016, is hard fucking work.
The mind of Charlie Kauffman must be an extraordinary place. The writer behind films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich is no stranger to introspection and his latest film, Anomalisa, is no different.
