After a short break, DDT have decided to revive the TV Show they were running during the worst of lockdown in Japan. Taking place in what appears to be an actual studio, I believe it’s going to be filmed twice a month and kicked off with Yoshimura challenging Brookes for the Universal Title.

I am here to report a crime, my friends! This DDT show ended in tragedy, and it is only right that those responsible for that tragedy face justice. I will get to it at the end of the review, but my god, won’t anyone think of me? It’s also called ‘Who’s Gonna Top?’ which is so on the nose, that I don’t think I can make a joke about it.

Another week, another trip to Korakuen for DDT, who like most wrestling companies are leaping at every chance to run that iconic building in the COVID era. At first glance, this card might look like it is lacking in big matches, but those that are there all have the potential to be great, so I’m putting it down as a dark horse to be a sneaky good show.

Bakuha Koshien is the Explosion Deathmatch side-project of Atsushi Onita and Sanshiro Takagi. It’s not actually a DDT show, but DDT is helping them out, hence the presence of a fair few of their wrestlers on the undercard. While I believe the original vision was for Onita to take Explosion Deathmatches around the world, COVID has made that difficult, so we’re getting a Bunkhouse Scramble in Korakuen instead. You’ll accept it, and you’ll enjoy it!

While their wee sister has had the Princess Cup shuffled around because of COVID, DDT was lucky enough to avoid that fate. They were able to come to Korakuen and see the King of DDT home, giving us a hint of what to expect at Ultimate Party at the same time.

The last couple of weeks have had too many shows and too many tournaments, making it impossible to ramble about all of them. With that in mind, I decided that rather than going through the first three rounds of the King of DDT match by match, I was going to pick out the best ones and focus on them.

If Tokyo Joshi is back in Korakuen, you can bet DDT was going to fall straight after them. Their sister brand set a mighty high bar earlier in the day, so it was time to see if they could hurdle over it.

With the world (well, parts of it) returning to normal, it was time to say goodbye to the DDT TV Show. They went out with a bang, though, delivering two big title challenges. Was it a newsworthy show or was the status quo retained? Time to find out.

The DDT TV Show has fans! Well, I assume it always had fans, but the fans are now in the building, watching from real seats and making real noise. Yes, they’re not quite at the stage of selling the place out, but this show was a wee slice of normality, and it was nice to see.

Unless things take a turn for the worse in Japan, this will be the last DDT TV Show to take place in an empty arena. It’s the end of an era, but probably not one that deserves much in the way of celebration. We can say that I think DDT have dealt with it all rather brilliantly, and it will be interesting to see if any of the tricks they’ve picked up along the way will continue to be of use in front of fans.
