It Follows

The problem with most horror films, is that they are not actually that scary.  Oh sure, they’ll make you jump and even maybe have the easily scared scream, but the second the jump is gone, the fear is gone as well.  It’s what a few people have described as cattle prod cinema and quite frankly most of us are bored with it.

Trailers = Shit

Trailers.  They’re a bit shit aren’t they?

I like getting to the cinema early.  I like finding my seat (particularly since most Cineworld patrons seem incapable of working out the seating system), getting comfy and watching the trailers.  Now, this ritual has led to some issues over the years.  I still involuntarily scream every time I hear Kevin Bacon’s name and you don’t want to see what happened the last time I walked past an EE store.  (Seriously, those adverts were the bane of my life).  But, I always enjoyed watching the trailers.  As someone who goes to the cinema far too often, I actually do see most of the films I want to (it’s the wonders of being unemployed, you run out of things to do around 2 pm) and slowly this has led to me realising that this trailer watching tradition, is negatively affecting my cinema going.

Where have all the rock stars gone?

Recent years has seen people begin to question where the rock stars have gone.  Those big personalities, who explode into your brain and make you sure you never forget them.  Thirty years ago, they seemed to grow on trees.  Axl Rose, Ozzy Osbourne, John Bonham and co meant that if you wanted a hellraiser, there was never one too far away.  Sadly, they have either gotten old, got fat or died and there is some truth in the idea that they were never replaced.  There are still hard partying musicians out there, but none of them grab the headlines in the way these legends did.

Far Cry 4

Charging into an enemy base astride an elephant, firing your gun left, right and centre before leaping off, stabbing someone in the neck and claiming it for the Golden Path, the freedom/terrorist movement (depending on where you stand) that you are a part of.  There is no denying that moments like this in Far Cry 4 make you feel awesome and that’s not even a campaign mission or the only way you could go about it.  Want to sit on the hill opposite and snipe, never even being spotted by those in the base.  You can do it.  Want to float in on a hang glider raining grenades from above.  Yup, they’ve got it.  Far Cry 4’s greatest strength comes in moments like this.

Rusev Crush

Who is WWE’s biggest heel at this moment?  Brock Lesnar?  Maybe.  But the truth is Lesnar’s not really a heel.  Paul Heyman is, but Lesnar has never once cheated or done anything remotely heelish.  He’s just awesome at kicking ass.  Behind Lesnar you have The Authority, a group most people are jaded with, but who have the brilliant Seth Rollins.  He was the guy no one expected to be the heel coming out of The Shield, but has done a brilliant job with it.  Behind him, is Rusev.  Who isn’t just one of the biggest heels in the company, but also the most credible one.

How Do You Solve a Problem Like Daniel Bryan?

Once again WWE has entered Wrestlemania season with a big thorn in their foot.  One, Mr. Daniel Bryan.  Now, as thorns go, he is a pretty good one to have.  One of the best technical wrestlers in the world, who also happens to be one of the most over with the fans, really not too shabby.  However, due to a series of booking mistakes, Bryan once again finds himself in a bit of ‘Mania purgatory.  One second he is set to face Sheamus, the next it’s Dolph Ziggler and at the moment some people are suggesting he might end up in the main event.  All this shifting of plans isn’t helping anyone, least of all the man himself.

Trash

There’s a lazy habit in the film industry of boiling things down to an elevator pitch and then sticking with that description.  Therefore, it’s no surprise that Trash has become widely known as a Brazilian, Slumdog Millionaire.  Directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Richard Curtis, the film has star power behind the scenes, but then chose to follow the City of God model by taking its lead actors from the streets of Brazil, rather than the glamour of Hollywood.

Big Hero 6

Following up a hit like Frozen was never going to be easy for Disney.  Their animated wing has hit a run of form with Tangled, Wreck it Ralph and everyone’s favourite snowy adventure, so the choice to adapt an obscure Marvel property for their latest animated film, might have seemed bold.  Of course, that was before adapting obscure Marvel properties became all the vogue and in a post Guardians of the Galaxy world, it’s become clear that it doesn’t matter how many people have read it, the Marvel Disney combo sells.

Adrenaline Mob – Dearly Departed

Adrenaline Mob came into everyone’s consciousness when they became one of the many bands Mike Portnoy threw himself into after he left Dream Theater.  Joined by Russell Allen (Symphony X), Mike Orlando and the likes of Rich Ward, they looked like a pretty cool supergroup.  However, slowly members have left.  Portnoy realised he didn’t have enough time to be in 100 bands.  Ward’s focus has narrowed in on Fozzy and the band has morphed into his current line up, which features Allen, Orlando, A.J. Pero (Twisted Sister) and Erik Leonhardt.  The changes led to second album Men Of Honor which it has to be said was met with a resounding meh.  So are Adrenaline Mob a band that we should be wasting out time on in 2015.

The Interview

It is fair to say that The Interview has caused a bit of a fuss.  However, hacking scandal and threats of violence aside, there is still a film at the centre of all of that and it has finally seen a release in UK cinemas.  The second film to come from the combination of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the first being This is the End, The Interview once again sees Rogen teaming up with James Franco to try to deliver comic success.
