I’d love to know how many bands I’ve declared to be my favourite. From my early years when I couldn’t imagine not loving My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy to the fiery passion that Nirvana still raises in me. I fall in love with a different band on a near weekly basis, and the truth is I don’t have a favourite. I have a family of albums and songs that surround me and which make my life better. However, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I haven’t been introduced to a band in the last ten years that mean more to me than letlive.
The Menzingers w/ The Flatliners & The Dirty Nil
Music to dream to would be a nice way to describe this particular tour. The Menzingers are on the road with bands that are perfect for long drives down American highways with the windows down. At least they feel like they are. As a resident of Scotland, it’s not a theory that I’ve been able to put the test. The closest I can come is seeing how they feel at the Oran Mor in Glasgow on a Saturday night. Spoiler, they feel pretty good.

The Smith Street Band – More Scared Of You Than You Are Of Me
The ability to tell a story through music is an incredible thing. There are millions of bands on the planet, but the number who can sit down, play a song and take you on a journey is much smaller. It’s a talent that turns good songs into masterpieces. It allows you, as the listener, to connect with them in a way that a good riff just can’t do by itself. And it’s a talent that The Smith Street Band have.

Weekly Playlist 19/4/17
This week’s playlist takes a dive into one of my favourite labels as we focus on the work of Xtra Mile Recordings. Not only does this allow me to put a bit of Frank Turner and Against Me! on there but we also get to dive into both Jamie Lenman and Reuben as well as a bit of the gentler stuff with Beans On Toast. Frankly, I think everything on here is brilliant so sit back and enjoy.
Creeper w/ Milk Teeth, Energy & Puppy
For all we bemoan a lack of album sales and extortionate ticket prices, there is a build it and they will come mentality in rock and roll. If you can put together a touring bill packed with greats, then the people will be there. Which is exactly what Creeper have done. Only two days after the release of their debut album they stalk in that goth way they do into Glasgow and bring with them one hell of a party.
Creeper – Eternity, In Your Arms
Bursting with punk rock exuberance and gothic theatricality Creeper’s rise over the last few years has been fascinating to watch. From disappearances to Peter Pan inspired tales they’ve found a way to grab the attention of an already fervent fanbase despite not having a full-length album to their name. Which is where the problem comes in. Will all that work fall apart if Eternity, In Your Arms isn’t good enough?
Skindred w/ Raging Speedhorn & Perpetua
JD and Coke, heavy metal and Marshall and Skindred on a Friday night. Some things just work and damn that last one works. In fact, Skindred on any day of the week gets the thumbs up, but with the joy of knowing that there’s no work tomorrow and you can sleep away the repercussions of the party, well that’s just lovely.
Metal Hammer
This week the sad news came out that TeamRock had gone into administration and in doing so was taking down Metal Hammer, Classic Rock and Prog Magazine. 73 people lost their jobs just a week before Christmas, and the rock and metal community lost the only mainstream magazines that still truly catered to that demographic. Basically, it was a colossal fuck up.
Weekly Playlist 23/11/16
With a new Metallica album out it seems only fitting that this week’s playlist kicks off with ‘Moth Into Flame.’ However, they weren’t the only band to release an album last week, and we also have a track from Petrol Girls which you can listen to while reading our review of their debut album. We then mellow out with some Pink Floyd, hit up our weekly Ginger Wildheart pick and finish up with the two punch of Frank Turner and Creeper. Nae too shabby even if we do say so ourselves.
Petrol Girls – Talk of Violence
It may come as a surprise to many, but there are bands not called Metallica releasing music this week. It will shock them further when they discover that it is yet another one of those protest groups that we apparently don’t have anymore. Petrol Girls describe themselves as feminist post-hardcore and quite frankly if they are willing to put that moniker on the internet and deal with the cuntery that will follow, then they deserve all the attention they can get.
