Ramblings About’s Top Twenty Albums Of 2018

Until I sat down to put this list together, I hadn’t realised how fantastic 2018 has been for music. It’s all the more evident for what’s not made my top twenty with bands like IDLES, Wild Cat Strike, Barely March, The Interrupters, Clutch, Pijn, Cancer Bats, Fucked Up and so many more missing out. If I’d wanted to be self-indulgent (okay, more self-indulgent), I could quite easily have come up with fifty albums that I loved and a hundred that were at least good. If you’re interested, buy me a pint sometime, and I’ll happily talk at you about them. In the here and now, here are the twenty that blew my mind.

Top 20 Albums of the Year

Today I am going to tell you my top twenty albums of the year, but before I get to that I think it would be remiss of me to not mention the death of Lemmy Kilmister.  There are going to be a thousand people writing a thousand words about Lemmy over the next few days.  Most of whom are in a better place to do so than me.  However, for my two pence, the man was rock and roll.  Few have lived as fast and as loud as Lemmy and none of them have done it until the age of 70.  His blend of punk rock attitude with rock and roll has been influential on everyone who likes to play loud and he will he be missed.  In tribute today, I suggest you play your music a lot louder and live life just that little bit wilder.  Anyway, on with the show.

Controlling the Hype

Media hype is an unusual thing.  In the last year or so we’ve seen organisations like Team Rock throw their weight behind bands like King 810 and Babymetal, two groups that arguably couldn’t be more different.  Yet, both apparently have the dubious honor of being worthy of taking their place as a ‘hyped band’.  Whether they would have succeeded with or without that is of course impossible to say, but there’s no denying that they will have come to many people’s attention through the mainstream rock press.
