The Art of the Comeback Album

This was originally going to be my review of the latest Pixies album.  However, I decided that was a bit boring and instead I’m doing a wider look at the idea of comeback albums.  Enjoy.

The last few years has seen the idea of the comeback become a bit of a trend.  With everyone from Refused to Crazy Town deciding that maybe the world needs them after all ( we really don’t Crazy Town) it’s become clear that coming back is the new black and in conjunction with that it raises the thorny issue of the comeback album.  Some bands do one, some bands stay far away.  One band who have recently decided to do a comeback album, although they have been touring in recent years, is the Pixies.  Now I should probably say this out of the bat, I bloody love the Pixies, they are everything that a band of that genre should be and while I’m not a huge fan of that kind of music, the Pixies have a very special place in my heart and because of that I apologise for anything I say about them that sounds mean.

A defence of heavy metal

So for some reason today Blabbermouth decided to run this story.  Now I should make it clear before this descends into a rant, which trust me it probably will, what happened at Fort Hood is obviously a tragedy and nothing I say is at all designed to take away from that.  If you think you are likely to be offended by any point I will make past the see more line below just don’t bother reading.

Victorian Trout Conspiracy Interview

This article originally appeared in today’s Daily Record (22/1/2014) however was slightly cut so I figured I’d post the whole thing up here for anyone who was interested.  Enjoy!

The Breadalbane Arms in Aberfeldy has probably not played home to too many great musical moments.  However, for Edinburgh based ska band Victorian Trout Conspiracy it will live in their memories as the place they were joined on stage by Brit award winning singer songwriter Ed Sheeran.

Hardcore dancing

This is going to be a rant.  Everything I get taught about journalism etc. teaches me not to rant, but I’m still going too because this is a rant about certain types of behaviour at live shows.  Said behaviour is the art of hardcore dancing, an example of which can be seen above.  Now, hardcore dancing has been going on for a long time but recently it seems to have been making a bit of a comeback with twats in baseball caps or hoodies going into the middle of the pit and fighting thin air like a wally.  Now I love a good mosh, I really want to make that clear.  If you take moshing out of metal you take out one of the things that makes it so brilliant.  However, this practice is the practice of cunts.  It’s as simple as that.  Even then though, I can accept it if they do it by themselves away from people who don’t wish to be punched in the face.  Let the mentally deficient hardcore dance together in a corner and the rest of us can enjoy the show.  Recently however, I saw some stuff that was very different and really annoyed me.
