Post Pop DepressionĀ came out of nowhere. A collaborative effort between Josh Homme (who produces as well as providing vocals and instruments) and Iggy Pop, it is however very much Iggy’s album and could easily lay claim to being his best in years.
Farewell To The Defiled
The DefiledĀ are the latest band to throw in the towel, announcing that like many of their peers, the financial cost of remaining a band is too much to bare. This follows high-profile cases like CJ fromĀ Thy Art is Murder, who left the band while claiming that trying to live life as a member of a touring band in 2016, is hard fucking work.
Brian Fallon – Painkillers
If you’ve been pining forĀ The Gaslight AnthemĀ ever since they announced their hiatus, then you need pine no longer, forĀ Brian Fallon,Ā at least, is back with a solo album that in all honesty, pretty much picks up exactly whereĀ GaslightĀ let off.
AC/DC
AC/DCĀ are one of the best rock and roll bands ever to strap on a guitar. You just have to hear one of those booming riffs blare out and you are taken to a better place. It doesn’t matter if you are a drunk eighteen-year-old in a field or an aging rocker reliving your youth,Ā AC/DCĀ are universal. And yet all good things must die, and in the last few years it feels like time has finally caught up with this particular behemoth.
Babymetal – Karate
My relationship withĀ BabymetalĀ has been strained at best. Ā When I first saw them at Sonisphere, I hated them with every fiber of my being. When I decided to give the album a go I was brought round a bit, the songs were catchy enough that it was hard to hate but over time I’ve never once returned to it. It was a curiosity, nothing more. However, the rest of the world very much did and slowly and surelyĀ BabymetalĀ have been building up one hell of a fanbase, all desperate to see what they will do next.
Baroness w/ No Spill Blood
Starting reviews with personal stories is always a danger, so if you aren’t interested in this one skip to the next paragraph. The last time I saw Baroness in Glasgow was in a tiny sweatbox, and I had to leave ten minutes into their set. I was ill, and the heat made me want to puke, which I did ten minutes later in a nearby alley. A few weeks later they were involved in a bus crash that would nearly destroy their career. Ā The chance to see them once again off arguably the best album of their career is one I wasn’t going to miss.
Wilson w/ Reigning Days, Donnie Willow and Twin Heart
If you are looking for good time rock and roll, then you can’t get much better thanĀ Wilson. Ā So a Friday night gig in Glasgow playing in what essentially amounts to being a basement seems like a guarantee for a good time.

Creeper w/ Grader and Rainfalls
The buzz aroundĀ CreeperĀ seems to be real and after the release of their most recent EP, they have taken to the road for their first UK headline tour. Ā Which rather nicely for those of us who live there, strolled into Edinburgh to play The Mash House.
The King Blues – Off With Their Heads
The King BluesĀ were never the biggest band on the planet, but they used to feel important. Ā Lead singer Itch was a man with opinions and even if you didn’t Ā necessarily agree with them all, his ability to deliver lyrics in a way that made them seem important, brought a lot of issues to people who might otherwise have never thought about them. Ā When they went their separate ways, it felt like a loss and their return should be a celebration. Ā It is a shame then thatĀ Off With Their HeadsĀ feels like nothing of the sort.
Download So Far

The Download line-up is shaping up and, as usual, it is setting itself up to be one hell of a weekend. While the headliners all felt a bit same old, same old the real joy is usually to be found on the lower stages, where you can see the bands that will hopefully be headlining in 10 years ripping it up in front of a handful of fans.
