The Guest

Adam Wingard is gaining a bit of a reputation for directing fantastically nasty films that revel in violence and absurdity.  Last years You’re Nextwas a comedy horror which flipped your exceptions on their head and gave us a constant stream of gore.  His follow up movie The Guest, is less of a traditional horror but embraces home invasion elements, while continuing to be a nasty film that is comfortable in it’s B movie elements.

Scaring Children

Everyone knows that traditional fairy tales have always been a bit scarier than their modern incarnations.  The years have seen the attitude adapted that children need to be protected from the grotesque, that they don’t like things that scare them and that anything that might do so should be avoided.  Now obviously if you are going to sit a child down in front of Saw, you should probably get your head checked, but the truth is that most kids like being scared, if it is done in the right way.

Fable

So to continue my streak of reviewing completely relevant video games, this last week I have been playing Fable.  Not even the second or third one, but the first.  This game came out in 2004, when I was 12.  If it makes it any better, my copy is the extended Lost Chapters version, which came out a year later.

Empress AD

If you are a regular on the live circuit, there is a good chance you have caught Empress AD.  Recent years has seen them support everyone from Cancer Bats to Kvelertak to Bring Me the Horizon, while also changing their name from just Empress and being signed to Roadrunner.  It’s gained them a reputation as a promising band, their heavy progressive sound insuring that they weren’t easy to forget, but it can be hard to truly love a band until you own their album, which is no longer a problem with the release of their debut Still Life Moving Fast.

God Gave Rock and Roll to Us.

Gene Simmons’ regularly proves that he is a man who speaks of thing he knows fuck all about.  For all I, and many others, love Kiss and the music they have released, the man is a fucking cunt.  In the last few days he’s piped about something that you would think he does know something about, rock and roll, and proved on that subject he also doesn’t have a fucking club.  Rock and roll is dead?  My fucking arse it’s dead.

Super Meat Boy

Football Manager aside, my start to game related writing seems to be exclusively limited to indie games that appeared in Indie Game the Movie.  This will be the last game, at least until I decide to check out Braid, to do so, but it is also one that has driven me insane, Super Meat Boy.  Now, once again I am years behind everyone else on this, I’m sure most of you have played Super Meat Boy, had your fun and it now sits in your Steam library uninstalled, or on whatever console you chose to play it on.  To be honest I did the same thing, I bought it a few years back, played it for a bit and forgot about it, until last month, when I decided to go back.

How long is too long?

ALBA

Nine years ago Sin City came out and proved itself a stylish and exciting adaptation of a comic book.  It’s embracing of the graphic novel style, was a new way to portray the genre and the stories entwined in it, while obviously pulpy fiction, were exciting and gripping enough to insure it’s success.  After numerous delays, we have finally been provided with a sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, a movie that has seen some of the old cast return, others replaced and others join.  Yet has it just been a little bit too long for this particular sequel to make a true impression?

Transfer Deadline Day

Yesterday was transfer deadline day.  For some a great day, for others one that rivals Christmas and New Year for being anticlimatic.  Particularly when you are still waiting around for your team to sign a bloody left back after several seasons of not having one.  Not that I’m bitter or anything…  Forgetting that momentarily, I thought today would be a good day to have a look back through some of the biggest moves of the day and give my opinion on them.
