Where do we go from here?

Music constantly evolves.  For every album that lasts forever, there are thousands that ten years after their release sound dated and old.  The world goes past them and that is the natural way of things.  However, it doesn’t stop people clinging to the past.  You just have to bring up a band like Bring Me the Horizon to a group of diehard metal fans and see the reaction.  ‘That’s not metal!’ blah blah blah.  All of this ignores the fact that it is without a doubt metal, it is just the next stage in a constantly evolving sound.

2015 Predictions

So we are now over a week into 2015 and the year is setting itself up, whether good or bad, to at least be interesting.  In the past I have done musical predictions, which I will continue to do this year, but I have decided to mix them up with film and maybe even a couple of gaming ones.

Sounding like your heroes

It is common in music to have a band ape the sound of those that came before.  A lot of debut albums can become a game of spot the influences, as elements of a bands heroes sap into their music.  However, there is always a difference between being influenced by and copying and you can spot the bands that are going to be special by the ones that take parts of these legendary bands and make them their own.  However, there is another problem with this method.  That being, when you take influence from those around you, you often end up with an album that is disjointed and sounds like the work of several bands rather than one.  Avenged Sevenfolds’ number one album Hail to the King, is the prime example of this.  There are some great tracks on that album, but when you take it as an actual album, it doesn’t hang together.

Download announcement

Festival season is up and running and while festivals like Bloodstock have been pulling out exciting line ups involving the returning Emperor and the always loved Megadeth Download have held off on letting the cat out of the bag on their headliners for next summer.  That is until today, when Andy Copping and co have decided to let the first of said cats out of said bag and let the world know exactly who they can expect to see when they are set up in that beautiful field down Donnington way.
