Summerslam Preview

For the first time in a long time, WWE seem to have decided to make Summerslam a big deal. Always seen by the fans as one of the bigger events. Recent years have failed to live up to those expectations. There have been some big moments, Lesnar demolishing Cena for example, but the event has always felt a few notches below Wrestlemania. This year it feels different. Not only has the show been expanded to four hours, but we have a huge main event and the kind of celebrity participation that is usually reserved for the biggest show of the year. Summerslam feels like a big deal and what goes down this Sunday, could well shape the WWE all the way up to Wrestlemania.

WWE 2K16

Footage has just been released of WWE 2K16, showing that… well it’s pretty much the same as all the other ones. WWE games have been running off the same tired engine for years now and even with a change in developer, it doesn’t look likely to stop anytime soon. Sadly, that engine just doesn’t work and creates an experience that has more in common with a fighting game than a wrestling game.

Battleground

Battleground is very much a B + PPV. Coming just ahead of Summerslam, it is one of those classic middle of the road WWE shows, which is more likely to set up Summerslam than do anything spectacular itself. However, with rumours swirling last week about who might show their face. Battleground suddenly became a lot more interesting to a lot more people. Diva Revolution

Raw this week finally saw the debut of three of NXT’s Four Horsewomen, as Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch were introduced by Stephanie McMahon to shake up the Diva’s division. It’s a moment that has been long overdue and almost instantly elevates the Divas division. However, we have seen NXT women being called up before and lost in the shuffle, so is it going to be different this time?

The Future of TNA

Something’s going down in the world of TNA and it doesn’t seem to be a positive thing. With rumours suggesting that Destination America are set to cancel Impact, the company’s future is on, at best, shaky ground and with the further announcement that ROH will be getting a six month deal to appear on a Wednesday night. It looks more and more likely that the network is moving on to a cheaper product. So where do TNA go now?

Samoa Joe

Last night, The Samoan Submission Machine pulled a fast one on pretty much every dirt sheet out there, when he appeared at NXT Takeover: Unstoppable. This was despite having only recently booked a whole bunch of indie dates for later in the year. Samoa Joe has been linked with the move to WWE since he left TNA earlier in the year and considering the talent set Joe has, it would have been a huge mistake by WWE not to leap at the chance. However, we have seen talented guys go in and out of WWE before and you have to ask whether Joe is one of the guy to make it to the top of the ladder?

Payback, what’s the point?

It’s hardly revolutionary to claim that WWE need to cut back on the number of PPVs they do (although with the Network they can’t really be called PPVs now), however Payback was one of those shows that reinforced that point. The post Wrestlemania season is always a bit flat in WWE, as they take the foot off the gas after the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’ and you can’t help but feel that the long-term implications of Payback are, well nothing.

The Intercontinental Title: What Comes Next?

So in a horrible case of deja vu, last night saw Daniel Bryan turn up on Raw and hand over his Intercontinental Title because of injury. Nearly a year on from him doing the exact same thing with the World Title, this somehow feels even worse. Two major injuries so close together suggest that Bryan’s body might not be able to keep going and you can’t help but worry that his career is drawing to a close. However, as I am not Bryan’s doctor and even if I was would be completely unqualified to talk about whether his injury was career threatening, that’s not what we will focus on here. Instead, lets take a look at the IC Title.

Extreme Rules

Extreme Rules felt like a show from a jaded company that was stuck in a slump. Something which is almost impressive, considering it comes just a month after one of the best Wrestlemania’s of all time. Overflowing with unneeded gimmick matches and the kind of juvenile humour which only Vince could laugh at, it once again came down to a few of the WWE’s great roster, to save the show.
