Doom (2016)

In the opening seconds of Doom, a nice lady who is voicing some sort of alarm system warns you that a demonic invasion is imminent. From there on in you can pretty much relax. You’ve got this.

Because Doom doesn’t rely on anything more complex than giving you a big gun and plenty of fuckers to shoot. Occasionally, you rip their arms off and beat them round the head with them. It’s the kind of ridiculous and gory violence that goes past disturbing and almost into hilarity.

There’s a story, but you don’t need to worry about it. I don’t know if there is anyone out there that considers themselves an expert on Doom lore but I’d love to meet them if there is. Because as far as I can tell it’s a load of old rubbish. Something about mining hell for resources, now where’s my gun?

What matters is that shooting these demonic bastards feels satisfying. And it does. You pick up a whole host of weapons but if you are anything like me you will spend more of your time with the Classic Shotgun. They can be all upgraded and that malarky, but even that feels unimportant. Something else to get in the way of the shooting.

Listen, Doom isn’t perfect. If you are looking for a video game that means something, then it is entirely the wrong place to search. I also have to be honest and say I didn’t even bother with the multiplayer. The main game is too fast for me at times; I would be demolished in that atmosphere. However, when you are plugged in and smashing faces in it is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences of the year. And you can’t say better than that.
