The Download line-up is shaping up and, as usual, it is setting itself up to be one hell of a weekend. While the headliners all felt a bit same old, same old the real joy is usually to be found on the lower stages, where you can see the bands that will hopefully be headlining in 10 years ripping it up in front of a handful of fans.

Headliners

Where is the next Metallica?  Where is the next Iron Maiden?  Where is the next (insert big rock and roll band here)?  They are questions that pop up at least once a year.  Usually around the time that Download announces a batch of headliners who are near identical to the ones announced a couple of years before.  But the question is, do we need a new Metallica?  Do we need Iron Maiden?  Or is this obsession with bands needing to sell out arenas preventing the next generation of metal bands making the step up to festival headliners?

Festival Season

So Download announcement’s have started and as usual the internet is all excited.  It’s become a worrying part of our festival culture, that the announcements now seem to actually get more hype than any of the bands themselves and personally I’d love Download to follow the model that Hellfest does, where it just released the majority of its bands in one go (check out that line up by the way!)  That’s not what I’m going to discuss here however, but rather an interesting divide I have begun to see in festival announcement reactions.  It’s one that to be honest confuses me and while this isn’t the first time I have noticed, it is becoming more and more common.

Download Announcement 4

So Download added another group of bands this week and I figured I might as well keep up my evaluation of the line-up as a whole.  It’s also become clear that Sonisphere will be returning with an announcement due on Monday!  So look forward to hearing me complaining/celebrating that line up as well.  Right now however, we’re heading onto Download street where we now have a couple of second stage headliners as well as some bands fleshing out the lower stages.

Festival season is up and running and while festivals like Bloodstock have been pulling out exciting line ups involving the returning Emperor and the always loved Megadeth Download have held off on letting the cat out of the bag on their headliners for next summer.  That is until today, when Andy Copping and co have decided to let the first of said cats out of said bag and let the world know exactly who they can expect to see when they are set up in that beautiful field down Donnington way.
