WrestleMania Weekend Part 1: NXT TakeOver

Rather than throwing my thoughts on everything that happened during WrestleMania weekend into one big post I thought I’d space them out. So over the next few days, I shall be giving the lowdown on everything I felt about the Grandest Show of Them All and all the hoopla that surrounds it. We start with NXT TakeOver: Dallas. Arguably, at least out of the ones I saw, the best show of the weekend.

What was impressive about this card was the complete lack of filler. With Elias Samson and Apollo Crews bumped into dark match territory this was all killer and even the least impressive match of the night, still contained the successful debut of Austin Aries and the continued evolution of Baron Corbin. While Aries debut into WWE might not have been the hot moment a lot of people expected, the match did everything it was supposed to do and elevated both men in the process.

The highlight, however, was Zayn vs. Nakamura. Both men went out there determined to beat the crap out of each other and it showed. What’s amazing, is that I’ve seen both of these guys put on even better matches elsewhere and if that’s not exciting, I don’t know what is. It made it hard for Joe vs. Balor to live up to it but they did a damn good job. Unlike many, I thought the EMT interruptions actually added to the match. They built the tension up and made Joe look even more impressive for battling on. I expect this isn’t the last we have seen of these two guys in the ring together.

On the downside Bayley dropped her title, however, despite being a Bayley guy, it was the right move and she went out in the only way she could – not giving up. Asuka is an incredible athlete and I kind of hope the defeat of Bayley leads to a heel turn somewhere down the road. We also had tag team wrestling finally catching up with the rest of NXT as American Alpha got their hands on the gold. They and The Revival are the kind of feud a division could be built around, and I really hope WWE figure that out.

All in all, TakeOver: Dallas was brilliant. It had a little bit of everything and throw in the fact that NXT’s musical choices (Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes for the win) are a million times better than WWEs, and I genuinely believe it stole the weekend. However, if you want to know what I thought the rest of what went down! You’ll have to come back for part two tomorrow.
