Xibalba is the name of the K’iche’ Maya underworld and apparently has a nice river of scorpions flowing nearby. I don’t actually know if a river of scorpions would flow, it would maybe be more of a scuttle. It’s also the name of a Californian hardcore band who have just released their EP, Diablo, Con Amor.. Adios. A name that pretty much covers all the bases seeing as it is literally the titles of the three tracks on it.
‘Diablo’ kicks things off with a big doomy riff before devolving into hardcore blended with death metal. It’s all pretty evil sounding but in saying that it would probably be more impressive if you found a way to put those three things together and made them sound pretty.
This is the kind of music that traps you in a corner and smothers you into submission. The EP is all of ten minutes long and yet those ten minutes punish you with every second. It shudders into your brain, shaking every part of you with its unrelenting heaviness. If I haven’t made it clear, I mean every word of that as a compliment.
If there’s a complaint, it’s that it does get a bit samey, however, over such a short release that isn’t an issue. If you were to expand this out to half an hour or so you might need to split up the punishment with something a bit different. All in all, though, this is one hell of an EP. I can’t claim to have listened to Xibalba before, but off the back of this, they may well be worthy of your time.
