19) Review

G1! G1! G1! It’s time, baby. The 29th G1 Climax kicked off not in Japan, but in America, and as usual, I’ll be trying to review the whole damn thing (apart from undercard matches, arsed with that). In a slight change, I am going to include some spoiler-free recommendations in my intros, so you can decide what to watch and what to skip without seeing the results. That seems smart, yes? I hope so anyway.

So for this first night, I recommend Lance Archer vs Will Ospreay, Sanada vs Zack Sabre Jr, KENTA vs Kota Ibushi and Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi. Read on if you want to find out why.

I started watching New Japan regularly in January 2017, so the idea that Tomoaki Honma was having five-star matches only a couple of years before is rather baffling to me. Honma wasn’t awful when I first tuned in (his injury has since seen him drop down to that level), but if you’d asked me to rank the roster, he would have been near the bottom.

I say it’s five-stars, but I’ve seen a few places say that Dave has never officially bestowed the rating on it. Truthfully, I don’t care. I want to watch and write about Shingo because he’s my boy, so if it’s bothering you, imagine it says wrestling classics at the top rather than Meltzer’s Classics. Better? Good.

Ramblings About’s Top Ten Matches of May 2019

It’s becoming a recurring theme for this list to go up a bit late, but in my defence, there is a lot of wrestling that I want to review. I have a habit of giving that precedence and I’m not even sure why. Anyway, I need to apologise because this is a New Japan heavy list. I watched every single Super Juniors’ show and while I did catch some other bits and pieces, it was less than I would have liked. Still, it was one hell of a tournament, so I’m pretty sure that every match justified its spot on the list.
