One thing that has become apparent in my attempt to watch all of Meltzer’s five-star matches is that no one is sure exactly what they all are. While you might think the Wrestling Observer would have an easy to access list, if they do it has been hidden from me. If anyone does know where I can find a comprehensive list, then let me know. While Raw has had a pretty solid start to life in the post-brand split WWE, it has been SmackDown that has caught the eye. Even with their limited roster, they have slowly been putting together a weekly television show that is worth watching. However, even the most ardent of fans must have questioned how that tiny roster would manage when asked to carry a PPV by themselves.
For the second time in its history, WWE has gone draft crazy with last night’s SmackDown Live signalling the start of a New Era – although how that fits into the last one, I don’t know. Like most of these events, the actual show itself was a bit of a disappointment, with the awkward podium sections not hiding that most of the matches were throwaway at best. Even the main event was hardly a classic. However, it’s got us where we need to be and after Battleground we will have an all new WWE. So how does each roster look going into that new world? Last night WWE aired the first episode of the Cruiserweight Classic, their tournament involving thirty-two of the best cruiserweights in the world. It’s entirely new territory for the company, and you only need to glance down the list of names to get excited. In this piece, I’m going to have a look at the first episode reviewing it in three separate areas: presentation, commentary and in-ring action.
For a young kid just discovering alternative music and trying to find a spot in the world The Hardy Boyz and Team Xtreme was a big part of my first foray into wrestling. It was Paul Heyman’s SmackDown that I watched every week, and it was that technical wrestling that fascinated me, but it was Jeff Hardy leaping off things that made sure I went from a fan to a fan for life. They were the epitome of cool in my mind and everything that a young fan wanted from their heroes.
There is an argument to be made for Money in the Bank having replaced Survivor Series as one of WWE’s big four shows. The last few years have had important events take place at this ladder heavy spectacle and this year is no different. Perhaps unsurprisingly, spoilers do follow.
Enzo and Cass’s introduction to the main roster of WWE didn’t go quite to plan. Their first big match – at WWE Payback – ended abruptly when Enzo was knocked out. However, out of Enzo’s plight an opportunity was born and the mouthy one’s partner was given a chance to show what he could do.
NXT TakeOver: The End has set some people all a tither. With the brand split now confirmed rumours have been swirling that The End might be more literal than we thought. While I can claim no insider knowledge, I think it’s safe to say that idea is mental. WWE’s developmental system is one of the most entertaining wrestling shows on the go and getting rid of it would rank in the top three dumb Vinnie Mac ideas. Which considering he once tried to take on the NFL is impressive. Whatever is due to happen in the months following The End, it is tough to see this being anything but another brilliant NXT show.
The internet wrestling community has been split over the last few days as to whether the incredible match between Ricochet and Will Osperay during the Best of the Super Junior Tournament out in Japan was ‘wrestling’ or ‘gymnastics’. All of this came about after a comment from the man they call Vader.
Extreme Rules went off the air with Seth Rollins standing tall over his former brother, Roman Reigns. It raised a simple question, would WWE steer into the cheers that Rollins was receiving or would they try and turn against the current and continue with the sham that is Roman Reigns’ face run? The answer to that question was given loud and clear on Raw. Rollins – for the time being – is bad to the bone.
